What a bunch of assholes, I quit smoking this year but I fully believe that it's every individual's right to do with their own body as they please with the restriction that it should not harm anybody else. Smoking on a lunchbreak is not going to cause any harm to any company employees. The argument of smelling like smoke is a non valid one. What about body odours?, What about sweet perfume ( IMO worse than smoke)? This is discrimination!!!

but jack the thing is most smokers do harm others, and the smell is even worse than the thought of the scala of cancers i might get. People smoke everywhere outside, waiting for the bus or train (the smoking zones on the stations dont work) or, and this is the worst: standing around the exit of our school!! I can?t leave my school without being attacked by the smoke, and its the medical faculty for crying out loud!!!
People are still allowed to smoke when they are outside and on their own piece of land, if they dont harm others. You also can?t drink while working, or inject yourself with drugs if youre addicted to that, but smoking is being found so normal by the mass that smokers think its an exception to this. How can smokers be objective about smoking, they?re psychologically ill (addicted)!!

Sorry JW, but I am a non smoker now, how can you say what you wrote. I Welcome you to our fantastic city and inhale and breath the air. That is 10 times more toxic than cigarette smoke. I have never been addicted to smoking, I just liked it. There are so many things that other people do ( sweet perfume f.e. ) that I find totally and absolutely repulsive. Should anybody be refused a job, because of using sweet perfume?, No way Jose.

I don't smoke as much as I used to, having a deck for absolute emergency stress but still, smoking is apart of your personal/social/w/e life, and doesn't so much involve your work life. Does that make sense? Like, you could have a smoke while on lunch break at work, but it's not affecting how you work etc.. If you were doing drugs while at work, go for it, sack them, but, smoking isn't illegal (well not on the terms of this). Although, it is the company's policy so too bad, I'd 'spose. Ridiculous but.

And JW, you must have some really inconsiderate people about where you live. At least if people wanna smoke here when there's a no smoking sign they ask the others around them. And in most cases (I've seen it happen) if someone does happen to object, the person won't spark one up. But I can understand your frustration in your situation..

Dumb argument, if I interpret it correctly. In this case one evil does not justifies another one or a so called less evil. I hear those kinda remarks all the time from smokers, and it simply doesn't 'fly'. If you wrote it in context with the articles 'the smell / health'-factor then I concur because that's simply taking it too far.

I do not agree with the policy of the company in that article and I find it incorrect that that girl got sacked. Smoking outside is ok with me, and she said to go even into town.

I do not agree with JW but I can fully understand his irritation. I did not ask for other people to get addicted to smoking and all smokers should understand that their bad habit is not only effecting their life & health.

I myself am not so bothered with people smoking around me, however I do sometimes think how fucked up and angry I would be if in a few years my health was going down the drain due to inhaling so much unasked cigarette smoke of other peoples bad habit. Then again, as Jack said, the air in my hometown isn't that healthy either so it would probably be a result of the combination of the two factors.

To be very clear: you cannot sack somebody coz of her/his smell of smoke, period. Next will be that non smokers cannot be in the presence of a smoker coz they would pick up the scent and also got sacked as a non-smoker coz they carry the smell of other peoples smoke with them.
