why mp3's suck...(please read) - IMPORTANT

[rant]I've been reading some comments lately about people wanted/needing my Town hall recording...that's cool, I like sharing. What's driving me mad is that so many people are requesting this show in the mp3 format, which is a slap in the face of someone who spent over a grand in recording equipment to get the best possible recordings and then someone comes along and encodes the recording to mp3.

Why do I hate mp3's so much? I really don't, I have a nomad jukebox with 9 gigs of mp3's...but that's for my personal listening, I don't share them out. See, what happens with a live recording is that one person encodes to it, lets say 192kb mp3 right? Then that person shares it out to 50 nelly fans, who then in turn encode it back to wav files so they can burn it to cdr and listen to it on their discman. When someone contacts them for a trade, they then re-encode the mp3>wav files back to mp3, let's say at 96kb. Now, unless someone shot off a .357 magnum a few feet away from your ear drums, you can definitely hear how poor a 96kb mp3 sounds like, you can get pops, cracks, NOISE, HISS, warbling and all kinds of shit encoded into the music that wasn't there...what's even worse with mp3's is that to save precious space a decent chunk of the sound frequency gets HACKED OFF. In other words, your mp3 encoded disc will sound nothing like my master copy.

This ticks me off, like I said, I spend a lot of money and TIME going to shows, enjoying shows AND taping shows to spread them out so more people can enjoy them.

Now, if you are on a cable or dsl modem, there's absolutely no reason why you cannot get onto the newsgroups or direct connect++ where the show is being shared out by me. Plus, the 20+ people who jumped on my offer can be gracious enough and do some cdr trades to further get this recording out to more fans (who are on dialup).

But for the love of god, please stop sharing out shows in mp3 format (or any other cruddy lossy format).

Lossy=to shrink a audio file down, certain frequencies are "thrown out."
Lossless=files are shrunk by half (or so) and the sound quality remains intact.

Well, like I said, I have personal uses for mp3's and I don't consider myself a audio snob, but I do like my music to sound as good as it should be, why should anyone settle for anything less?

not to insult your intelligence or anything, buttttttt maybe it would help if you would continue burning the songs on cds for people, then people might not have the inclination to download them and save them to mp3 format...just a thought

and I'm not saying you should continue the cd thing, I know it takes alot of time, but you see my point hehehe

Well, not to insult you at all, but I do have a life outside of burning discs all day long, don't you think that's kind of selfish to say something like that to someone? I can't see your point at all, it's up to everyone else that has the ability to obtain the shn files to share them out as well besides me...that's what makes this place a community, right?

Not everyone can be a leech. I did my part as a taper and went googling for a Nelly Furtado forum to share this show out...I think I'm doing all I can to get this recording out to people. Imagine what it would be like if you were in my place...

It's just...you can't not expect people to not do something like that once you open up something like burning only 50 cds and then close the offer. I understand where you're coming from, but once you burn cds for everyone here, who's there left to burn for? and there's what? like only 70+ people who use this forum on a frequent basis? And that's everyone on here, not only the people who want the recording. I get ya. I just don't want to be snooty about it. heheheh just offering a counterpoint.

I don't see the problem with mp3s of that kind (live performances) yeah I know taht qality thing but at least they are good for me, so upload ot to a server and put the links for us..and u forget of burn cds all day long

I totally get what you are saying about the shn files vs. mp3s, I have been listening to the shn files for the last few days and loving it, I'm not even gonna bother changing it to mp3 cause the quality of the shn files is amazing I wanna keep it that way.

I have been transfering the shn files to a few of people over the net, if anyone wants them just PM me and we can work something out, the best way of doing a transfer of them I have found is over ICQ, now I know that a lot of poeple hardly ever/never use ICQ anymore, but it is better than say MSN for file transfers cause it has a resume feature that MSN is lacking.

I am happy to burn CDs for peopel that want them as well, if you guys send me a CD-R, the same kinda deal as what has been offered already, so yeah if you guys want to take me up on that, PM me and again we can work something out.

Gloco, I realy appreciate what you have done for us with this recording, Thanks heaps for it! It is awesome to be able to hear a full concert from Nelly, especially this quality!

Thanks a ton for sharing the show as I intended it to be, I greatly appreciate your time and effort! Everyone else: thanks for the kind words! Once people learn about shn, flac and other lossless formats, there's no looking back to mp3's.

Perhaps a "pro" for mp3:

they use far less bandwidth than lossless files. For people who have download limitations (like me), I prefer downloading 3 shows in MP3 over 1 show in SHN. It's not that I listen to those songs on some professional equipement, where you immediately hear the shortcomings of MP3.

But I understand your point.
