USA Today Interview w/ Fan Questions

Nelly Furtado answers your questions

As promised, USA TODAY's Donna Freydkin picked a few of the questions you submitted for Nelly Furtado, and served as your proxy interviewer. Here are the five questions she asked on your behalf, plus Nelly's responses. And check out Donna's story as well:
Ron P asked, "Do you feel more freedom from the 'pop star' image you projected just a few years ago? Whose idea was it to change your image? (It was for the best in my opinion!)
NF: "I was always that kid in high school who would show up with different outfits every day. One day, preppy. One day, skater. One day, hippie. It was always in my nature to try everything. That's what my career will always be like. I'm always going to be changing. My styling reflects my personality at the time. It's never premeditated with me - I go with my heart because I'm a really bad liar."
Gilda Pujadas: "Nelly, I really love your songs, especially Fotografia, your dueto with Juanes, so, tell me, will we be hearing in the future more songs in Spanish from you? Your Latin American fans will be happy hear that's so!"
NF: "I'm planning on recording a full-length Spanish and Portuguese album with Gustavo Santaolalla. He's the one who won the Oscar for Brokeback Mountain. This will be some time in the next three or four years, definitely."
Lambert: "Nelly, was it a big step for you to come out with a hip-hop flavor this time around?"
NF: "Luckily, I've collaborated with so many hip-hop artists in the past that it was second nature to me. Luckily, it was also my first love as a teenager. I've collaborated with hip-hop artists like Missy Elliott and The Roots. I became comfortable doing it. I really love to rap on stage and love to sing R&B-style songs on stage. It's really natural to me."
Rachel Meddar: "I know you have mentioned in interviews that your almost-3-year-old daughter, Nevis, has had a major influence on the youthful and vibrant sound that is heard on Loose, and you credit her for that sound. I was wondering if there was anyone else or an event in your life that has also influenced/impacted Loose.
NF: "Probably just being in Miami, being in that energy and around the Latin vibe and the heat and the festive environment. Timbaland is just a liberating person. He brings out another side of myself as an artist. I'm thinking about moving there! I'm having a real love affair with Miami right now. But I do love Toronto also, where I live."
And, closing the session in suitably intellectual style, here's Will: "My question: Oh, my lord! Where did you get that body?!"
NF: "After I had a child, my body changed and became more curvaceous."

Furtado puts on her heels
NEW YORK ? Pop's hottest mom just loosened up even more.
Nelly Furtado is standing at the edge of Radio City Music Hall's legendary stage rehearsing the two songs she'll perform Thursday at the Fashion Rocks concert (9 p.m. ET/PT Friday, CBS).
Dressed down in a roomy white shirt and capri jeans, she first croons with Timbaland her hit Promiscuous. Next, she struts up four steps, stands on a platform and grinds her pelvis while belting out Maneater. The singer, whose new album, Loose, hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts and has gone gold, proceeds to dance around in open-toed black heels that would trip up a lesser mortal.
Furtado, 27, subjugated the stiletto after presenting and performing in silver spikes at MTV's Europe Music Awards in November.
"I had really high shoes on," she says. "I had to wear them all night. It broke me in. I only dance in high heels now. Even at rehearsal, I'll have my high heels, and all the dancers have their runners on. It hurts after a while, but I'm used to it. High heels give you a little bit of height and help with certain steps and angles."
She attributes her newfound confidence on stage to acting classes ? and to her daughter, Nevis, who turns 3 in a few weeks. After "becoming a mother and experiencing childbirth, you just carry yourself differently."
Her current look is "sexy and womanly and kind of classy and funky at the same time."
She has taken some hits in the press for her offbeat and brightly hued ensembles, but Furtado remains oblivious to any fashion police citations.
"I like colorful clothing," she says. "You have to be yourself. You're not going to be perfectly styled and put together every day."
For Fashion Rocks, she's sticking to a simple theme: " '60s, with black and white, with the dancers in turtlenecks and tights."
She describes her black and white outfit as "really fitted and sexy."
Performers include Elton John, Christina Aguilera, Beyonc? and Daddy Yankee; proceeds from ticket sales go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
Furtado, who sang at John's post-Oscar party in 2001, was approached about six months ago to perform. "It's a good event ? very glamorous and elegant," she says.
She's most excited about seeing Faith Hill and Tim McGraw sing because "they have really good chemistry."
As for her own personal chemistry, Furtado says she's "casually dating, but that's it. There's no ring on my finger."
Nevis accompanied her mother to the Teen Choice Awards in August but won't be at Fashion Rocks.
Furtado sees something of her own showmanship in her daughter, whose father is deejay Jasper "Lil' Jaz" Gahunia.
"She already knows the words to Maneater and the chorus," Furtado says. "She likes the beat and energy of the song."

I hate when I know she's in New York City and I'm, like, a fifteen-minute subway ride away, but there's no way I'd be able to catch her.
