Re: Timbaland's answer to this "controversy"

what song did he use this sample in?
and what's the story with the casio keyboard lawsuit?

and i'm sorry to burst tims bubble but what he did was illegal. Sampling without permission is illegal. An example is like when Madonna used an Abba sample in Hung Up she had to ask for permission.
Even if it was harder to find the owner of the copyrights, being a professional, he had to make the effort.
You can't go an sample one of Timbalands basslines for example, without expecting a big lawsuit from the record company.

I think you propably can, but sayitright'll know better about that. Haha, I thought it was funny what he said about the keyboard, lol, I agree - if they put a sample on it, and people buy the keyboard, it should be allowed to be used.

What's essential is that these samples needed Timbaland to make them into popular songs, so obviously something significant was added. Had he claimed he came up with the melody himself, I'd judge him, but since he admits the artists "intellectual" rights (if not their copyrights) I'm quite ok with it. Nelly still should stop working with him.

For real. Timbaland is so talented, but he's become SO arrogant lately. She'd do better with Will.I.Am and some other people. Because if Tim's arrogance ever rubs off on her, I'd have to walk across the country and smack her in the back of her head.

And that song, was not a demo on the keyboard. That song was written for contest in Finland, using the same board Tim used for Do It. It wasn't in a video game and it wasn't a demo.

Besides, it is NOT legal to take a demo off of a keyboard, throw a drum beat on it, and not credit the writer. This isn't the same as recording the instrument sounds that come with the keyboard, this was a full song.

Don't you think it sort of has rubbed off on her a bit.. That new KiisFM interview she says something like, we wanted to make a song telling people how great we are because Tim's had alot of great songs over the years.. I dunno. I just see a change in her personality a bit lately. Before she was confident, but now it's being cocky. I guess having Timbaland and Justin Timberlake in your corner does that to you.

absolutley agree, I don't like his whole kind of him... he looks to me like he is thinking that he is the only one who can make good music... I hope Nelly will never become so...

And about the stolen song: If he really took the idea of a video game, it is not his own idea. And if it is not his own idea it is a stolen idea.
If I know that an idea is not my own it doesn't matter if I now the person who had the idea. It will never be mine idea.

Anyway, Tim's whole sample explanation was really really outlandish lol. But what I think he was trying to say was that he didn't take that persons work and try to claim it as his own. But he did sample for Do It, and he says the sample came from a video game. He also tossed in there that when he samples he might not know where the song came from, possibly because of no credits or w/e other reasons, but he'll still sample and put the song together anyway. However at that point it's unreleased and in his keyboard or wherever else he puts his songs. And then if an artist does use it, it will have to go through sample clearances. And lawyers will do the sample clearing. Tim is not responsible for getting the samples cleared. Tim has been cut from albums where he was suppose to be producing on because the sample could not get cleared, eg. Ludacris's last album and Tim's own song Lights Out didn't make his last album because the sample could not get cleared for whatever reasons, but it was leaked so many have heard it anyway I need to listen to the interview again, because I'm confused about one thing he said, but I'll just fix or edit this post if needed.

But when he was talking about the keyboard, he wasn't talking about himself he was talking about Swizz Beats (producer) getting sued for using a demo from a keyboard. Well, I mean it makes sense that you would think you could use any sound that is on the keyboard you purchased. And if the demo on your keyboard is Mary Had A Little Lamb lol (like on my keyboard) and you wanted to sample it, then why not? But there is probably more to it than that.

edit: okay last thing I have to say is, I hope that he doesn't think he can sample something and not get it cleared if he doesn't know where the sample came from. He didn't say that, but I hope he doesn't think that.

Yeah, man, but the Finnish producers didn't sample anything. They CREATED that melody.

But I have to agree- I really hope he doesn't think he can sample anything without getting it cleared, too. Because, seriously, that's just so wrong.

There's only one Finnish guy in this case.

And...no they weren't. The music was redone FOR an 8-bit computer with permission by the original creator. The version Do It has is the remake for the old Commodore 64. And no, there's no sampling involved in making music for old machines. You're basically just telling the computer to bleep and bloop in a certain way.

See it's Tempest's words against his at this point. I wish he could have said what game he is claiming the sample came from, then again he might not be too sure what game if it really did come from one.
No, it's Timbaland's word against the 3000-4000 people who were at the demo party when the original by Tempest won the competition.

Um, and what else? I've seen people claiming that Acidjazzed Evening has sampled from Street Fighter Alpha, but nobody has given any hints as to what song is in question. There are tens of songs in a video game soundtrack and I've tried listening to all of them to hear a song that sounds even vaguely like the original. And there isn't. There's certainly nothing concrete to back up that claim.

Timbaland is not arrogant...even if he did "steal" the beat -- at least he put it to good use and you have to understand DEADLINES HAVE TO BE REACHED.
