Fans tend to be very possessive, I'm sure if someone congratulates Nelly for her work she'll be very thankfull, but she doesn't need to say it all the time like many others cause, at the end of the day, it would sound fake and pointless.

I'd say that would apply more easily to something like visual arts, where more people regard an artist's work as something that they do for themselves whether other people like it or not (although they'd obviously want others to buy their work if that's how they make their living). for example, fans of a painter's work would be far less possessive and would have more of the mentality that you have towards nelly's art:

it's her 'art', if we didn't keep buying it, it would still be her 'art'. We buy it cause she's good and she has influenced us in some way.

however, there are more shades of grey involved when art meets popular culture. with an artist like nelly, whose art is popular music with mass exposure, things get a little trickier. fans will feel that they are owed gratitude because they are the ones who essentially enable the artist to create on a mass scale. if they don't buy, there goes the recording contract.

there are the artists who would rather remain underground for the rest of their careers, but you can't blame an artist for wanting to have more exposure and be more economically successful at his/her craft. like nelly's said before, she loves the idea of people having great accessibility to her music. I can't remember the exact quote, but something about a mum and her daughter being able to tune into I'm like a bird on the car radio in any town.

sorry, I'm tired and rambling and I don't even know if I'm making sense what I'm basically saying is that I can totally see your point and agree with it, but I can also see why fans can get possessive and feel that some artists are ungrateful. it becomes more complicated when you're doing art within popular culture... the artist needs the fans to pursue his/her goals as much as the fans need the artist to satisfy their needs for art.

I just think it would be the coooolest thing ever if nelly posted here like the rest of us, kind of as if she was a "regular" person but everyone knew that she was nelly. lol, id be here more often than I already am! I've always wondered if she has joined as a cover-up name or something. maybe not at this board but maybe at her official one I think I would as an artist, I think it would be loads of fun to connect with your fans!!
