Teen review: Furtado lets 'Loose' with hip-hop style


The music industry is experiencing some interesting changes.


Yellowcard and Keane both found some new attitude. Jack White got a makeover in the Raconteurs. Now it's Nelly Furtado's turn to explore on her new album, "Loose."


The pop singer, best known for her radio hit "I'm Like a Bird" in 2000, got a reality check when her follow-up album tanked three years later. This time around she's teamed with hip-hop producer Timbaland.


The results are interesting, to say the least, with Furtado rapping on the first single, "Promiscuous," which features a chorus that somehow got stuck in my head longer than it should have.


If you didn't see Furtado's name on the cover, you'd never be able to guess it was her singing. This is a whole new Nelly. In addition to Timbaland's fingerprints on "Promiscuous," "Maneater" has Gwen Stefani elements, with the cheerleader-like verses making the two almost sound identical.


It would seem that Furtado has dual personalities. One part of her wants to be a recognizable hit-maker like Stefani. The other wants to be a singer with greater ambition, like she showcases on "Te Busque." Unfortunately, there's more lackluster material than should be allowed by Timbaland, with "Afraid' and "No Hay Igual" proving almost unlistenable.


Furtado's problem is that she tries too hard to change, and that's not what shows off her true talent. The few bright spots, like "In God's Hands," can only make fans hope Furtado comes to her senses.

wow even tho i dont agree, that was a pretty fair and good review for a 16 year old.

yeah, i thought the same thing, lol, this guy seems to actually have listened to the whole cd properly before making the review, whereas some proffesional reviewers only really reviewed promiscuous, maneater and no hay igual
