The Sun - Article

Quote:
THE third album from Canadian singer Nelly Furtado is a complete change in direction.

Thanks to hip-hop producer Timbaland and The Eurythmics, the singer/songwriter has turned her back on pop for a sexier dance sound influenced by her favourite Eighties bands.

Chatting to SFTW, she says: ?Timbaland came to the studio with loads of CDs and music.

?We both ended up talking about the Eighties and influences from then. So many bands inspired us ? Talking Heads, Blondie, The Police ? and we talked about The Eurythmics, saying if we were Dave and Annie and making a record now, this is how we think it would sound. Their track Here Comes The Rain really inspired us. It?s poppy but dark and edgy too.?

After Nelly?s disappointing 2004 album Folklore, she went back to the drawing board and teamed up with the man behind Snoop and Nas to make Loose.

Loose woman

Maneater ... Nelly gets tough

Also in SFTW

? Nelly Furtado: I love men
? Scritti Politti returns
? Keane: the komeback
? Declan is Irish rover

New woman ... for Loose album

?My first album Whoa Nelly sold 7million and Folklore sold 2million, so yeah I was disappointed but it developed me as an artist and I was able to move forward from it.

?I explored a lot on Folklore which I had to address following the first album and the success it bought. A lot of fans loved it though.

?With this album I had already started working with different producers and then got to the studio with Tim. We had already worked together before. I was on the remix of Missy?s Get Ur Freak On and Tim remixed Turn Off The Light so it wasn?t like a new relationship but it was the first time we had collaborated.

?I?m still the same Nelly but I?m Like A Bird was five years ago now. I have grown and developed as an artist. If I was still doing the same thing I was doing five years ago I would worry.?

Loose has given Nelly a street-sounding urban makeover in the same vein as Gwen Stefani and Mariah Carey?s more recent releases.

First single Maneater, the reggae-flavoured No Hay Igual and the sassy Promiscuous are this album?s big tracks.

And in the video to Promiscuous (a future single) a certain Justin Timberlake puts in a guest appearance.

Nelly says: He just came down to the video set as he and Tim are friends. He only has a little cameo.?

And what happened to the track Crowd Control Nelly made with Justin?

?We got together as he was recording his album in Miami with Timbaland at the same time as well.

?Timbaland just said we should do a track together and I had fun with the two Tims. Justin?s an amazing artist, really inspiring because he has evolved so much as an artist.

?The track is really cool, an upbeat fun track with a sexy vibe. It didn?t make my album as I had finished it by then but I think it might turn up somewhere, maybe as a bonus track on his record. You?ll just have to search it out.?

A standout track on Loose is All Good Things, which originally started off as a duet with Chris Martin.

Label politics from Coldplay?s EMI meant it was removed from Loose at the last minute.

?I?ve been friends with Chris Martin for a while and bumped into him at the MTV awards in Miami last year. I told him to come down to the studio as he loves Timbaland and Timbaland loves Coldplay so I knew they would get on. Chris came to the studio and we just jammed for about five hours and came up with All Good Things. It is such a beautiful song. We wrote it together.

?Who knows if we will perform the song together one day??
