Again... that was done by a programme that does it for you... it wasnt hard work at all... I used to have the programme myself a few years back...

very cool...and yeah I've seen that programme in effect years ago when they showed an artist using it to create a cover of Time magazine. The mosaic was of Marilyn Monroe, with tons of photos from the "greatest photos of the century" archive or something. They even zoomed in on her mole, but hell I forget what the mini photo was of. (David Cassidy I think)

It's actually quite simple. The programme would firstly take as input a picture. This picture is then split up into a certain number of segments. The number of segments probably corresponds to the number of pictures that the programme would also take as input. An average brightness value of each segment of the initial picture is recorded. An ordered list of these values is then produced. The many pictures are then resised to specified dimensions and they are sorted according to their brightness values. These two lists then directly correspond and a picture can be created accordingly. Viola.
Of course it isn't as simple as one paragraph but you get the idea. Also it would surely be a lot more effecient, and it may be more complicated in terms of things like colour and alpha lighting, etc, etc. One thing I'd also like to say is...OF ALL THE BEACHES! Lol Moffat Beach is rather boring lols. I guess the mountain just up to the right of the pic is nice but of course it doesn't even include that.
