Saluting a Song Bird

Hey Guy's....Im sorry if this has been posted already.....

One day, Nelly Furtado and her little one are out at the ROM to check out the dinosaurs. (“Again,” emphasizes the pop star.) The very next night, long after her presumed bedtime, four-year-old Nevis is at the museum again, but this time to watch Mommy get an award.
Just another week for the double-life-living Furtado, who manages, somehow, to make it look easy to be a Stairmaster-enabling, Timbaland-jamming, world-spanning chart-topper one moment, and just another goody-goody, Toronto-fort-holding, stay-at-home ma the next.
Last Wednesday, these two lives came crashing into each other when, at the Royal Conservatory of Music’s annual Royal Occasion gala, she was the special guest. To be precise, the ukulele-playing Maneater was there to get an honorary fellowship, joining a cast of characters that includes everyone from Bruce Cockburn to Oscar Peterson to the Barenaked Ladies.
“This is a pretty nice event,” cooed Nelly, when taking the stage after dinner sounding, I thought, not unlike a classic Judy Holliday in Born Yesterday. In the near-outskirts of the beautifully done-up room an “ice curtain” dripped, as if on beat. The light, cast a thousand different ways from the mirrored tables topped with candelabra centrepieces, did the classiest of jigs.
With patron-saviours like Tony and Elizabeth Comper looking on, as well as that prima donna of the classical scene, Marilyn Thomson, our Furtado paused and then chugged along. She dedicated her degree to her great-grandfather, who was a composer — not of a famous orchestra, but a local marching band. Keeping with theme of music for music’s sake, the Grammy winner also paid homage to her mother in Victoria, who devotedly drove her to various music classes “six times a week” when she was growing up.
And, then, of course, she let her singing do the speaking.
The gala, held next door to where the Conservatory’s exciting new digs (the Telus Centre for Performance and Learning) will be going up in the fall, also had out various other creatures from the Toronto social ether. There was, for instance, society jeweller Myles Mindham, who told me a little about his recent travels to New Zealand. There was, right on cue, Ontario’s Minister of Culture Aileen Carroll, who told me just how exhilarated she was about the quality of the artisan sheep’s milk cheese course. There was the she-conjurer behind the Conservatory’s new building, Marianne McKenna, who wore architect’s black, and was the brunt of a royal applause of her own.
The finest instrument is the mind. That’s the Conservatory’s new tagline to go along with its new building. That probably is true. But the most persistent chorus — at this gala, at any gala or any gathering of homo sapiens — is the one of hearsay. It’s hard-wired, you might say, inside us. Consequently, it was probably not too surprising that at this event there was quite a bit of the talk about the exact expectant-ness of Ms. Nelly. Showing off a new hairdo — it’s black again after a brief detour into blond, and resembles Janet’s cut from Three’s Company — the singer-songwriter also came sporting a rather new body of work.
Alas, after some inquiries, a source close to Nelly insists to us that she is not, once and for all, about to give her Nevis a younger brother or sis. And that any bumps, real or imagined, are just, well, honorary.
