Arrow old school>new school

in the old days, commercialism was limited so there was less untalented artists. these days commercialism is big so there is a big number of untalented artists. what happens is MTV just gives anyone publicity these days and then those artists gets attention so they can get people to buy their music doesnt matter how talented they are

im a hip hop fan myself.......many of u probably are gonna jump to the point and think im a twist minded person cuz u think i like listening to music with drugs, violence and degrading women stuff, but i dont. dont listen to MTV rap, MTV rap doesnt deserve to to be called hip hop at all, its hip POP. why? it got sucked into commercialism, just like many other genres and recently we all have seen Nelly got caught in it a little bit

90% of the mainstream rap is garbage and is meaningless talking about nice cars, money, etc. back in the days from mid-90s and before rap took talent, listen to poets such as Tupac, Common, Mos Def or Nas and automatically u'll stop stereotype rap as just all about killing people, degrading women and meaningless. mainstream rap will soon DIE which is great, cuz atm underground rap is thriving and when that's dead, underground will take over.

real hip hop fans admire it for the poetry, lyricism and unity. wannabes are uneducated people who think its 'cool' or 'gangsta' to listen to rap

I agree 100%.

I could have said that, lol. Most people don't know what real hip hop is and just look weirdly at you when you say you listen to hip hop. I don't really care anymore. I guess I got used to it. Plus I don't watch TV anymore and I have no idea what's in the charts. I just don't care anymore. And I gave up trying to teach people, 'cause there are too many who think hip hop is on MTV.

Personally, I don't like Tupac and Common too much. I'm more into "nerd rap", as I've heard people calling it. =/ I like this underground feeling that groups like Company Flow or Cannibal Ox have. I like weird beats. So, basically everything that El-P touches, lol. This guy is a genius.

As for your usertitle, Tupac IS dead. You die hard fans have to get over it. Shouldn't he have "returned" last year according to all these theories?

EDIT:

But on the other side you have to be glad that commercial hip hop exists. This is how most people get into hip hop at all. And some of them slowly take notice of the underground and get into it. So, maybe underground hip hop wouldn't be as "big" as it is, if it wasn't for commercial hip hop...

I think there is good music in all genres, you just have to look for it.

Re: old school>new school

I don’t think it’s a matter about old school vs new school, maybe for the specific case of hip-hop could apply but if you want to generalize it would be a matter about pop vs non-pop.

Pop is not new, pop culture has existed for centuries. It’s just a matter of simplifying the life, making it easier to understand by creating some patterns to follow. Pop music is based on that, whatever type of music you want to choose. Pop is made to create simple and shallow emotions that could not be judged as bad or wrong, but it just exists to cover some very basic emotional needs. That is the reason why is more popular, because it’s easier for people to walk in the surface than to walk through deep, dark passages.

I personally get quickly bored by pop, so I need to look for music that makes me explore deeper emotions. But that is just because I’m a crazy nonconformist.

well that's only for these new generation listeners - many of them have had to be educated from other hip hop fans to recognize what hip hop is, ive witnessed that alot. i came from this category too, i use to think rap was bout bling bling and stuff till i met some real hip hop fans and taught me bout it and then learned everything else from there

tupac is alive. recently a new rapper, underground i believe, named Blac Haze has come out and has the SAME voice as tupac which gives another piece of evidence that hes alive. there hasnt been any bio bout him due to lack of publicity

whether he is dead or alive, dont expect him to come back anytime soon. he wanted to stop rapping and get out the spotlight b4 he died

Nas' "Hip Hop is Dead" was failing in the charts and I didn't even notice. That's sad, innit? What do you think about "Lil' Wayne", "Makaveli4Lyfe"? I kind of like some of his music, although some people despise him for starting his personal revolution of skill with a ghostwriter.

Re: old school>new school

^^....i didnt talk about wayne....

well sales dont matter. at least the people who buy nas' albums are loyal fans and people who really respect him, rather people who are just groupies and kids who know nothing bout him

underground rappers' publicity are low so they obviously dont get as much attention as mainstream does and will sale very few, but ask any of them and they'll say something like, its not about sales, its about music and respect. they'd rather die than to go pop and become greedy for money over hip hop

50 cent's sales more than nas, does that make him better than nas? 50 sucks ass at rapping
