May 20, 2007 -- MEMO to Nelly Furtado: Next time your manager books you on a reality TV talent show, make sure it's "American Idol."

After successfully reinventing herself as a hip-pop sex symbol on her latest album, "Loose," Furtado ditched the Timbaland beats and went back to the more elegant songstress style of her earlier albums during a showcase spot on the May 8 episode of "Dancing with the Stars."
Clearly Furtado was bidding to goose sales by showing the older-skewing "Dancing with the Stars" audience that she was more than just a "Promiscuous Girl" (for those unaware, that's the title of her hit single from "Loose.) It didn't work.
"Loose" sold only 21,000 copies in the week after Furtado's appearance on the show, a miserly 16.6 percent gain over the prior week's figures, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The tally ranked as only the 20th best sales week since the album's release on May 30, 2006.
Compare that with the sales performance of Shakira's "Oral Fixation Vol. 2" after her appearance on "American Idol" last year, which shot up an astounding 636 percent to 81,000 copies from 11,000 copies.
Furtado and Shakira share many of the same characteristics. Both are beautiful, talented, 20-something singer-songwriters. Both specialize in the same hip-pop musical style and essentially have overlapping audiences.
So why book Furtado on "Dancing with the Stars" when her core fans so obviously watch "American Idol?" And please, please, please don't say it was to showcase her musi cal range. If that's the argument, we ain't buying it - just like consumers didn't buy her last album, "Folklore," which sold just 419,000 copies before Furtado reinvented herself as a sultry siren on "Loose" and went on to sell 1.8 million albums. omg! i really sometimes think that the US don't know nothing about music..really in the us u have to do hip hop or rnb to have more success...in the UK/Europe AGT is going and went so well!! nelly did nothing stupid..it 's just the people who don't get it !

Dancing With The Stars audience is older, I think it was actually pretty smart getting her to sing I'm Like a Bird trying to get some of her old fan-base back. And its proved that her Maneater performances un US haven't added any effect to her sales at all.

Dancing With The Stars is just not the type of show that if you sing there your single will climb to #1 like it happens with American Idol.

^ Agreed, i thought it was a great choice especially for Dancing with the stars where they can't exactly jump around or jive to Maneater. ILAB was a nice slow, choice that was more appropriate for the audience of the show. I dont think all the older people would have appreciated a promiscuous hip hop dance..its more elegant and about style

I disagree. Sales wise, of course, but she made her millions laready with Loose, so now she can make performances that actually matter and are artistic. Like how some wish that IGH wouldn't be a single because it will likely flop, but so what, it'll be great, maybe a very touching video and she might sound inspired when singing it, so that's enough for me. It's not like she needs to pick another tasteless single to feed Nevis It was a beautiful performance, and when she's old and looks back on her career that's what's gonna matter.

i totally agree with Icescape! shes made all the money she needs to out of this album, now its her time to sing the songs she enjoys singing for herself

that post just goes to show that sex sells. it's really sad b/c Folklore is Nelly's best album in my opinion (and im sure many of you can agree). the post made it sound like her other styles of music were not worth it since Loose is her most successful album in terms of record sales--(it hasn't yet surpassed the sales of Whoa, Nelly!, but i'm pretty sure it soon will). I totally agree with what Icescape and DeeTox say--i think she should begin to go back on her own track of music making and/or reinvent herself yet again. that way she can have an even more broad fanbase while still keeping the hardcore fans like myself and many others on this forum!
