Breakthrough artists make way for veteran Canadian music stars this year, as Sarah McLachlan and Nelly Furtado lead the 2004 Juno race.

With five nominations apiece, the Canadian chanteuses -- who both took time off prior to the release of their latest albums to have babies -- are proving that it doesn't always pay to be shiny and new, at least where the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences is concerned.

The nominations for the most coveted award in the Canadian music industry were announced Wednesday in Toronto.

Last year, the lion's share of the nominations (and ultimately, album of the year and three other Junos) went to newcomer Avril Lavigne. But this year's nominations feature more of the tried-and-true, perennial Canadian favourites.

Both McLachlan and Furtado are up for Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Pop Album of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. As well, Furtado has a nomination for Single of the Year for the song Powerless (Say What You Want) , and McLachlan is in the running for the Juno Fan Choice Award presented by Doritos.

Next up, with four nods each, are previous Juno winners Celine Dion and Nickelback. Dion is up for Francophone Album of the Year for 1 Fille, 4 Types , Album of the Year for One Heart , Artist of the Year and Fan Choice Award.

Meanwhile, Nickelback -- whose debut album made the band the top Juno winner in 2002 -- is up for Single of the Year, Group of the Year, Rock Album of the Year and the Fan Choice Award.

Nominees like the Barenaked Ladies, Our Lady Peace and Sam Roberts are no strangers to the Junos either. The Ladies and Our Lady Peace are both up for Group of the Year, with a second nomination for Pop Album of the Year and Single of the Year respectively. Roberts, meanwhile, is up for Album of the Year and Rock album of the Year for We Were Born in a Flame .

Shania Twain, who picked up three Junos and hosted last year's show, rounds out the Fan Choice Nominees and also picked up a nod for country recording of the year for her hit Up!

Of course, newcomers weren't shut out of this year's nominations altogether. Toronto rockers Billy Talent picked up three nominations, including Rock Album of the Year and New Group of the Year, while B.C. crooner Michael Bubl? -- who is also a hit south of the border -- picked up nods for Album of the Year and New Artist of the Year. Lillix and Barlow also scored two nominations apiece for their debuts.

In the best new artist of the year category, Barlow and Bubl? are up against Kazzer, Danny Michel and Kinnie Starr while Billy Talent and Lillix face off against The Dears, Three Days Grace and The Trews for best new group. Newcomer Shaye also picked up a Single of the Year nomination for the song Happy Baby .

BrassMunk, Choclair, IRS, Mr. Roam and Sweatshop Union all picked up nods in the Rap Recording of the Year category, and Danko Jones and Sum 41 also scored in the Best Rock Album category.

For best vocal jazz album, Holly Cole is up against Jeri Brown, Ranee Lee, Denzal Sinclaire and Carol Weisman.

This year's Juno awards will be handed out in Edmonton on April 4, and nominees Barenaked Ladies, Michael Bubl?, Nelly Furtado, Sarah McLachlan, and Nickelback are among those slated to perform.
