Hammersmith review
Nelly Furtado
Hammersmith Apollo Wednesday 21st February 2007 I got inside the venue with no problems, at 19.10 and headed straight for the stage. With several queuing up a long time before me, I would expect them to have gone straight to the stage too, but so many go to the bar or merchandise stool first. This allowed me to get in the 4th row standing, on the left hand side. There were a few taller people in the first few rows to the right of me that gave me a poor view when Nelly was over that side of the stage. I think it was 19.30 when the first support act came on. They were called Unkle Jam (and they must have told us this at least a dozen times), who had 3 vocalists. They were very camp and the music was terrible. Probably the worst support act I have ever seen. Thankfully they only played 3 tracks and left the stage. About 20 minutes later, 2 guitarists came out followed by a female singer. Before they even started playing the girl standing behind me said ?you?re white, get off the stage?. Her and her male friend had made a few racist comments before and had been moaning all night. I didn?t let it get to me, I ignored the rest of what they had to say. The singer was called Jasmine. She performed 3 songs, 1 I thought was OK, the others I didn?t like. She went on to be Nelly?s backing singer. The final support act was called Socrates. He was rapping. It was dreadful, as I find all rap. Although he wasn?t going out about sex and money as all the others do, he still sucked. He finished at 20.40. He played percussion for Nelly. At 21.10, the large curtain was removed and a big screen came on. Nelly?s backing band came out to play and on the screen was a helicopter that had ?Nelly Furtado? written on the side, landing. Nelly came out at about 21.15, at the top of the stage wearing a purple dress, tights and with her curly black hair, shoulder length, singing Say It Right. I didn?t like the sound of it. There was some effect on her voice for the first few songs which included some horrible versions of I?m Like A Bird and Turn off the Light. After changing into a black dress, she slowed it down and I much preferred it like this. She played a nice version of Try, although I would have preferred the original, I slowly sang along with it, and I think that got the loudest applause of the evening. During one change of costume, Jasmine and Nelly?s band played Justin Timberlake?s Sexy Back, with Nelly joining in with the end. During another costume change the large screen came down at the front and 2 of the dancers danced and kissed for a couple of minutes. There were dancers on stage all night (no more than 4 at a time). They were annoying. After thanking Jo Wiley, she also played an acoustic version of Gnarls Barkley?s Crazy as she done last year in Jo Wiley?s Radio 1 live lounge. Nelly played guitar herself for Hey Man and another song. Forca was my favourite performance of the night. There was a lot of energy on stage, Nelly dancing herself (she danced a bit) and her dancers collecting balloon-balls from the back of the stage and throwing and kicking them into the crowd. At the end of the song, Nelly signed a proper soccer ball and gave it to someone in the front row. Party, Powerless, Promiscuous (Socrates doing Timberland?s vocals. He provided a lot of vocal towards the end of the evening), Glow, Showtime, No Hay Igual, Do It and All Good Things come to an end. She also played an unreleased track she wrote 2 years ago, I would guess would be called ?Stars?. She wasn?t over-the-top with her costume changes, not in Pink?s league anyway, wearing 4 different costumes (1?s enough!). She wasn?t in Pink?s league for entertainment either, but Nelly is a very good entertainer despite talking little during songs. She finished at 22.35. There was five minutes of cheering, clapping, foot stomping and chants of ?more, more? and ?Nelly, Nelly? before she came back out. The final song of the evening was a stretched out version of Maneater. When that finished the concert was over, at 22.55. I promptly made my way home, not stopping off for any merchandise. I was home at 00.30. I?ve always wanted to see Nelly after seeing her 2.5 years ago on TV at Party in the Park. Unfortunately I had no money that year when she was touring for Folklore. I really hate her new album, Loose. And listening to her first 2 albums over the weekend before this concert I don?t like many of the tracks on them either anymore (there were always tracks I didn?t like anyway). I don?t class myself as a Nelly fan anymore. |

Re: Hammersmith review
I reposted it in hope the HTML tags would go. Not sure why it's doing that, I only wrote it in Word. Sorry.
When I ordered the tickets I still liked the 1st 2 albums in my mind, and I wanted to see Nelly live because I thought she was great at Party in the Park a few years ago. My music taste has changed a bit over the last year. I'm not listening to too much "catchy" stuff anymore, but the lyris are the biggest key now. There are only a couple songs by Nelly I like now. |

Has anybody got any pics of the evening? It was my first time seeing Nelly and I admit not knowing anything about her - my bf dragged me along - but I'm a convert! So if you have any pics it would be great to see some!
