Re: Commercialised?!
I see what some of u guys are saying. I don't think she is acting over-the-top sexy, but I miss some of her subtlety...I think she should dance more, and I love her moves in the video (u can see some of that Indian dancing in her hip movemnets), and I think she still has that cuteness about her, but I am just a bit concerned about a one-dimensional view of sexuality, that is about skin and obvious lyrics. I think she has a more complex view of sexuality, and i wish that would come through a bit more. but maybe I am missing the double-entendre in "Promiscuous"? I think she looks great, and I don't think that showing skin necessarily equates to sex, bcause i think she should wear whatever she wants...i am just curious about the message that the lyrics+aesthetic+her words about the album will give. They seem a bit simple for her.
I do like the beats, and the melodies, though. With "Maneater", her layered vocals are reminiscent of ABBA, who she grew up listening to. I think dance-oriented music is very important, and that simple messages can still make for good music, as long as it is not too obvious. but overall, i think she is the same Nelly, and has great energy. I love the movements featured in the vids (well, the 20s i have seen of "Maneater", along with the full "Promiscuous"), because the choreography really suits the music, and the shapes and poses that the dancers create are strong. I think she has preserved the artistry there. I can't wait to hear more of the album. From what I hear of "In God's Hands", she has a lot more to offer. I think hiphop can be fun and sexy, but it can also be thought-provoking and political. when i heard she was doing hip hop, i figured she would showcase her strengths in her use of simile and metaphor and imagery in delivering strong messages about social justice, etc. Her old hip hop with Nelstar was more in that vein. but still, fun, danceable music is important, because some music should make u feel good. Her positive energy really shines through in her music, and I love the harmonized stylings of her latest vocals. I just hope some day she will do an album of Conscious Hip Hop, which was the original hip hop. |

Re: Commercialised?!
Ahh, this is one of the topics where I just want to stay at the door and slap everybody that enters. lol

I'm not saying that this is a bad thing. I just don't like this type of commercialism. I think it's an abuse of the "blind" audience. (Did I just insult the entire forum? I didn't mean to. lol). I want more than just catchy beats and pointless lyrics. I can't really seem to find an artistic part in the new Nelly. And I already miss that. But all that doesn't mean that I will hate the album. There might be some tracks I like. Who konws... (*leaves backdoor open*). I got used to the new tracks. That means I can listen to them, but yet not fully enjoy them. And nice post Seb. I totally agree. ![]() Quote:
Soo, when I look at my post it seems like I hate everything and everybody. But I really don't. ![]() |

Re: Commercialized?!
Whoa, Nelly didn't do well. Folklore didn't do well. I think it's time Nelly get some props. Hopefully, newer fans will listen to and love Loose and check out her older albums and see how much of a gem Nelly really is.

Re: Commercialized?!
Yeah it's more commercialized, moving to Interscope, it's so much different from Dreamworks that's for sure. But I think, out of all the people she could have worked with, Timbo was a good choice. He's done some low-key stuff, some very popular stuff, I think he's very creative and fresh and stays on top of things instead of following others. You guys need to listen to "The Rain" by missy elliott and him, or Brandy's album "afrodisiac"...good stuff. She could have just gone for like daddy yankee or 50 cent or something haha, Timbo is a good choice. I think she deserves massive commericial success. Of course that always costs somethings, but she can always do whatever she wants...she could have quit and learned classical guitar like she wanted to...
