Maneater is different!

It's not your typical mainstream song. In that sence it's completely different from Promiscuous, which IS completely mainstream, at least for North America.
My first reaction when I heard this song was, "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?"
Coincidentally, this was exactly my reaction when I first heard a lot of her songs on 'Whoa Nelly'. For a long time I didn't know if I liked this song or not. It gradually grew on me, and since seeing her best live performances, I love it.
I don't understand all the people who came on this board and complained that her music had turned into regular mainstream crap. No way! Not this song, anyway.
Maneater has such a punk feel to it, with a little bit of hip-hop flavour. It's truly a punk pop song, as I've read. Very unique. And very Nelly.

For this reason it may take a while to catch on in radio.
But even if it doesn't, I 'm still very happy it was an international hit. It's an acceptance and appreciation of Nelly's unique take on music.

Here, here CrazyCanuck, well said! I think it's way more original than that disgustingly mainstream Promiscuous (sorry for my harsh words), it gives Nelly a little more credibility - she does the kind of music she likes (most of the time)

Having said that, I'm still glad this song was released first and reached #1 on the charts. People before were always saying, 'Nelly Furtado, pfffffft, she's never even had a #1 hit.' Well at least now they can SHUT THE HELL UP!

Yeah, I certainly did. In a way I am happy too that now where I live (Finland) people finally know Nelly Furtado exists, and ILAB wasn't her greatest - and only hit - song after all , but then even though many tracks on Loose show her originality much better than Promiscuous, I still think she can do so much better, and shouldn't bend to that pop genre, that's for people who DON'T have such an unique talent as her. You know, especially on Folklore, she has these amazing, very spontaneous sounding rhythms that you would expect to hear in some esoteric initation ceremony of some tribe, but not in pop music. I just think she has great skill of building all sorts of tensions inside music. And then of course the great richness of SOTR and TOTL, these songs seem to have so many layers. What I guess I am saying is, I wish the world knew Nelly for the true artist she is, and her uniqueness and talent, not that she can write a good hit. I wish so much to hear, and request TOTL, Try and SOTR among others on the radio, because I know people would be surprised how good songs she's written. (Only ILAB was really played here before Loose, so in a way I'm happy for Loose, but only if it's one of a time, and doesn't describe all Nelly will write during days to come - which I don't think it does)

Lol, this got a little long, and funnily ardent, and I still have to add: I was watching this Music rating show, where they have a few people who actually KNOW about music, or should, but then they played Powerless, and the guy with a music education was saying something like "oh, yeah the regular teenage popsong, like we haven't heard it a thousand times, nothing special.." ! That really made me stop listening to his evaluations with appreciation. I should have send him the whole 2 cd's and there's no way anyone with real understanding of music would call them ordinary, or insignificant. What is truly great too is that she actually wrote the best songs on Whoa Nelly herself - how many people in the music business today actually have songs that are completely written by them?

But yeah, I find Maneater and Afraid at least original, then Somebody To Love and All Good Things too, but I think she should make a new version of AGT, the chorus gets a little too monothonic, but otherwise it's a great song. Btw, I liked that live performance-version of AGT better, even though she cut out the good whistle and ending part.
