In the other hand, some big "indie" bands are still on independent labels yet they have a distribution deal with major labels. Like Death Cab For Cutie, The All American Rejects, etc.

yeah, I think the more money a label has invested in you, the less artistic decisions you have.

I've been to a couple of film festivals in NYC a few times, and I have never seen so much shameless promoting from indie filmmakers to get people and film critics to see their movies. Those festivals are always crazy. By the looks of it, they all want their movies to go mainstream and get a big distributor to back them.

In Cannes, I hear it's much worse. People go through crazy lengths to be heard. And a lot of independent filmmakers where fuming when Sony premiered the DaVinci Code there because it took the attention away from a lot of the indie films people were struggling to promote.

I dunno, I don't think any aspiring filmmaker wants to be obscure. They all want the popularity and good reviews to earn a reputation, gain a bigger budget, and get better actors so that they are able to make movies they really see in their heads.

So I agree with Vin in his last post :-)

Just my opinion though All my favorite movies are mainstream, lol
